The study of Sociology is very important in the contemporary era because modern societies are becoming more complex due to rapid social, economic, technological, and cultural changes. Sociology helps us understand how society functions, how social institutions operate, and how individuals interact with one another. Through sociological study, we can analyze social problems such as inequality, poverty, unemployment, gender discrimination, and crime, and develop ways to address these issues effectively. The Department of Sociology was started in 1947 under the leadership of Dr. I.P. Desai. Initially, Dr. Desai was appointed as a professor of culture and later, he started sociology, and he became a first professor of sociology. In that tradition, many learned professors like Dr. Ramanik Bhatti, Dr. Ila Vora, Dr. Harish Doshi, Dr. J. K. Dave, Dr. Sanatbhai Gadhvi, Dr. Gaurang Jani and Dr. Anil Vaghela have brought fame to Shamaldas College. Finally, Dr. Anil Vaghela has brought fame to the college and university on the national level through the sociology of sanitation. Initially, the college was affiliated with Mumbai University, then Gujarat University, Saurashtra University and since 1989, Bhavnagar University. A postgraduate center was running in the college since 1971. In 1989, when Bhavnagar University was formed, a separate PG department was formed and the college center was closed. Many students of this department have made a name for themselves in government jobs, businesses and in the field of public life.

Samaldas Arts College was established in 1885 and was affiliated to Bombay University the Subject of Gujarati was started in 1922-23. A number of literary Luminaries adomed this college who contributed a lot for the creation of future literary figures. They were Manilal Nabhubhai Dwivedi a teacher of Sanskrit subject. He Gave his valuable contribution in Gujarati literature and achieved reputation internationally. The great teachers like Shri Ravishankar Joshi, K.B. Vyas Dr. Ishavarlal Dave, Dr Ramesh Shukla and My Dear Jayu, who have adorned Gujarati language and literature a lot and more they brought liveliness in college's future traditions. Mahatma Gandhi was a student of this college, who had achieved par excellence and acclaimed good reputation as an international figure, also contributed to Gujarati language and Gujarat State and enhanced the reputation of this college. Apart from, M.K. Gandhi, Balwantrai Thakore, Mansukhlal Zaveri, Ramnarayan V. Pathak, GijubhaiBadheka, Harindra Dave, Gunvantrai Acarya, Vishvanath Bhatt, Zaverchand Meghani, Yashvant Pandya, Anantrai Raval, Vajubhai Kotak, MukundralParasharya, Harivallbh Bhayani, Kundnika Kapadiya, were students of this college and have done outstanding work in Gujarati literature as well as in the history of freedom struggle. Gujarati Sahitya Sabha' was started in Samaldas Arts College on 15th July, 1934. MunirajIshavarlal Pandya was appointed as its first honorary secretary Under the guidance of this Sahitya Sabha, various lectures were arranged on Gujarati literature, wherein Kanailal Munshi, Lilavati Munshi, Chunilal Madia, participated in various symposium, seminars, lectures and gave expert lectures in the same My dear Jayu, a teacher of Gujarati, has achieved 'Katha Award' of Gujarati literature which is the outstanding achievement to our college and our Gujarati Department. Then, Mahendrasinh Parmar, Hardvar Goswami and Jagdish Parmar were the students of this college and are also doing excellent work to enhance the reputation of this college. Thus, the college at present also enjoys a noteworthy status in Gujarat.
